~ Directions and Map of Waties Island

In 1992, 1,049 acres on the island and the adjoining uplands of Tilghman Point were donated to the Coastal Education Foundation, Inc. The gift has been protected with a perpetual conservation easement through The Nature Conservancy of South Carolina. It was the wish of the late Anne Tilghman Boyce that the property she left to a charitable trust be maintained “in essentially a wilderness state.” Through her bequest, the support of her surviving children, and a large cash gift from her late sister-in-law, Kitty Lou Tilghman, the University has gained a magnificent addition to the facilities it can offer to students and faculty for education and research.

The Waties property is an outstanding example of an undeveloped complex of ocean frontage, fresh and saltwater marshes, tidal creeks and upland woods. Surrounded by a rapidly urbanizing environment, Waties Island is becoming increasingly significant for research, monitoring and education about the natural coastal habitat. The island is a very dynamic place. Since 1989, the South Carolina coastline has been affected by seven hurricanes, as well as several other tropical storms and “nor’easters.” As a result, change is the rule rather than the exception. This makes Waties Island an excellent outdoor laboratory in which to study natural coastal processes. Take a breathtaking tour and visit with our faculty and students who are actively involved in research on the island.

Fall Open House

Date:
Nov 10 2010 - 4:30pm - 7:30pm
Building/Room Number:
BCCMWS Warehouse

The Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies is hosting its Fall Open House. Posters and displays will emphasize ongoing Center research initiatives and program capabilities. Center staff and students will be on hand to explain the range of research projects, capabilities and specialized instrumentation. In addition, a number of partnering organizations and agencies will have displays illustrating their regional and cooperative efforts. Following the open house, a brief program will review highlights of Center accomplishments from last year, as well as announcements of new initiatives of potential interest to the community. The focal point of the presentation will be the satellite connection to a ship in the Gulf of Mexico where two Center staff members are working on a research cruise utilizing the famed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s deep submersible “Alvin.” They will check in and provide a brief overview of that project and with some luck, some images of their activities on the cruise.
